PAPR Respirators / PAPRs – Powered Air Purifying Respirators
PAPRs / PAPR respirators are battery-operated respirators utilizing a blower to draw air through filters (for particles) or cartridges (for gases or vapors), purifying it before supplying it to the wearer. High-efficiency (HE) filters are also available for use with these respirators.
The advantages of PAPRs include their minimal breathing resistance coupled with high-level protection. Generally, they offer greater protection compared to non-powered half mask respirators due to the blower generating positive pressure inside the facepiece, thereby diminishing leakage of potentially contaminated air. A half facepiece PAPR has an Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 25, while a full facepiece PAPR reaches an APF of 1,000.
These respirators come in a variety of configurations, including tight-fitting half or full facepieces, as well as loose-fitting facepieces, hoods, or helmets. Loose-fitting PAPRs, which do not require fit testing, may serve as an alternative for individuals with facial hair or those unable to pass a fit test with a tight-fitting respirator.
PAPRs are not to be used in oxygen deficient environments.
